Summer Begins With a Strawberry Moon in St. Augustine
From the Archives — 2026: I originally drafted this piece in June 2016, when a full Strawberry Moon coincided with the summer solstice, but never published it. I’ve dusted it off and lightly updated it while preserving the original St. Augustine summer snapshot.
The official start of summer in 2016 arrived with something special: a full Strawberry Moon coinciding with the summer solstice.
Despite the name, it wasn’t because the Moon turned strawberry red. The name traditionally refers to the time of year when strawberries were ready for harvesting.
If you’re still looking for somewhere to take the family this summer, why not St. Augustine or Vilano Beach?
The weather is warm, the beaches are beautiful, and vacation rentals, hotels and bed-and-breakfasts abound.
There’s plenty for the children, too. Spend a day at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, visit Marineland, or wander through our historic downtown.
The Castillo de San Marcos and St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum are worth a visit, or head south and get out on the water. Devil’s Elbow is still operating today as an Old Florida waterfront resort with boating and fishing opportunities. Visit St. Augustine
For the adults, St. Augustine has never suffered from a shortage of things to do.
We’ve got ghosts and pirates, a winery and a distillery, museums, tours, restaurants and plenty of live music after a day at the beach.
And in 2016, we even had Wolf’s Museum of Mystery—one of those wonderfully odd little St. Augustine attractions that has since disappeared. Florida records show the company eventually dissolved in 2019. Sunbiz Search
