904-599-MOON: Abraxi Taxi Zone Rates in 2014

Taxi companies in St. Augustine, Florida, traditionally used either a standard meter or a flat-rate system commonly referred to as a zone rate. Abraxi Taxi used zone rates.

There were pros and cons to both, but I generally preferred the zone-rate system.

Why?

Once we quoted you a price, that was the price.

Traffic backed up?

Same fare.

Construction detour?

Same fare.

Bridge of Lions decided to open at exactly the wrong moment?

Still the same fare.

The meter wasn’t clicking away while everybody sat in traffic.

There were circumstances when a metered taxi might have been less expensive, and if somebody asked, I wasn’t afraid to give them another cab company’s phone number.

How Our Zone Rates Worked

When calling Abraxi Taxi for a quote, we needed three things:

Pickup location. Destination. Number of passengers.

The passenger count also told dispatch whether we needed to send a car or one of our vans.

Our rates were generally calculated using downtown St. Augustine as the starting point.

Here is a snapshot of what some common Abraxi Taxi fares looked like in 2014:

Downtown St. Augustine: $5
St. Augustine Beach: $8 and up
Vilano Beach: $10 and up
Crescent Beach: $14 and up
World Golf Village: $25
Matanzas Inlet: $35
Ponte Vedra: $55
Palm Coast: $55
Jacksonville Beach: $65
Jacksonville: $65–$85
Daytona Beach: $75
Jacksonville or Daytona Airport: $75
St. Augustine Airport: $10

Again, these are historical 2014 prices—not today’s Abraxi Taxi rates.

Additional passengers and extra stops could affect the fare.

We were also pet friendly.

As I rather inelegantly explained it back then, we charged for pets as if they were human.

Bicycles were another matter.

Why I Liked Zone Rates

The idea was simple.

You knew approximately what transportation would cost before getting into the cab.

Traffic, construction and bridge openings were the driver’s headache—not an excuse for watching the meter climb.

For a small local taxi company, I thought that was a fair way to do business.

Abraxi Taxiom: The bridge may go up. The fare doesn’t have to.
